Commonly Used Crochet Abbreviations

You'll find that most crochet patterns and books have a legend for the terms used, however, for those times when it isn't included, here's our list of common crochet abbreviations with their meaning.

* = Repeat instructions following single asterisk as directed

** = Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

( ) = Alternate instructions

[ ] = Repeat a series of instructions given inside brackets

= inches

alt = alternate

beg = beginning

bet = between

BL = Back Loop, block, or bobble, depending on the context

BP = Back Post

BPdc = Back Post double crochet

BPsc = Back Post single crochet

BPtr = Back Post treble crochet

btw = between

CC = contrasting colour

ch(s) = chain(s)

ch-sp = chain space

cl = cluster

cm = centimeter

cont = continue

dc = double crochet

dc-cl = double crochet cluster

dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together

dec = decrease

dtr = double treble crochet

ea - each

esc = extended single crochet

eesc = extra extended single crochet

esk = edge Solomon's knot

est = established

fdc = foundation double crochet

FL = front loop

flp = through front loop(s) only

FO = finished object

fol/l = follow

FP = front post

FPdc = front post double crochet

FPsc = front post single crochet

FPtr = front post treble crochet

fsc = foundation single crochet

fwd = forward pass

g = gram

half dc/hdc = half double crochet

hdc-cl = half double crochet cluster

inc = increase

incl = include / including / inclusive

lp(s) = loop(s)

m = meter; also mesh

MC = main colour

mm = millimeter

msk = main Solomon's knot

oz = ounce/s

opp = opposite

p = picot

pat/patt = pattern

pc/pop = popcorn

PM = place marker / place a marker

prev = previous

rep = repeat

rem = remaining

rev sc = reverse single crochet

rnd(s) = round(s)

RS = right side

rtn = return pass

sc = single crochet

sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together

sh = shell

sk = skip

sl st = slip stitch

sp(s) = space(s)

st(s) = stitche(s)

tch/t-ch = turning chain

tbl = through back loop

tog = together

tr = treble/triple crochet

tr-cl = treble crochet cluster

tr tr = triple treble crochet

Tss = Tunisian simple stitch

Tks = Tunisian knit stitch

Tps = Tunisian purl stitch

Tdc = Tunisian double crochet

UFO = unfinished object

WIP = work in progress

WS = wrong side

YO = yarn over

yoh = yarn over hook
